Elon Musk, Tesla Motors’ CEO, wants to build a gigantic, billion battery factory somewhere in the southwest that would not only put the U.S. back in the advanced battery business, it would exceed production of every other battery factory in the world – combined.
His audacious plan would be funded mostly with other people’s money (but more importantly, not the government’s) and would produce 35GWh of battery storage a year – enough, he hopes, to supply 500,000 affordable EVs by 2020.
