This last weekend a story came out that indicated a Super Computer had Passed the Turing test.
What is the Turing Test you ask? The Turing test is a test of a machine’s ability to exhibit intelligent behavior equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human. The test was introduced by Alan Turing in his 1950 paper “Computing Machinery and Intelligence,” which opens with the words: “I propose to consider the question, ‘Can machines think?'” Because “thinking” is difficult to define,
But let’s clear a few misconceptions about this story. First, do not listen to reporters. They take any story and run wild, typically embellishing a few facts. Like in this case there was no Super Computer. it’s a chatbot. It’s a script made to mimic human conversation. There is no intelligence, artificial or not involved. It’s just a chatbot.
Also plenty of other chatbots have similarly claimed to have “passed” the Turing test so this is not a first time event.
The chat boxed “cheated” by telling people it was a 13-year-old boy from Ukraine in order to mentally explain away odd responses.
if you want to find out how human a computer is, get rid of the Turing method and definitely do away with automated / scripted chat boxes. Next time throw in a real computer, some AI and put the computer on Jeopardy then you will see how “Human” a computer can be.
