New rules adopted by the California Department of Motor Vehicles require a driver to take “immediate physical control” of a vehicle on public roads. That’s hard to do if there’s no steering wheel.

And that is the problem with the newest Google self drive cars that were legalized in California.

They were not built with human controls. Thus the first run cars will not be allowed on the streets.

Google is un-phased, they have added basic controls to a new proto-type.

They can and will build in the needed controls for future roll out but are hopeful legislation turns in favor of a more hands free environment.
