4 seedlings were planted in a 10 gallon jar back in 1960 and not watered since 1972 has survived totally self contained. Not only has in survived it has thrived.
This maybe perhaps the smallest oldest surviving ecosystem in the world.
The gardener David Latimer wanted to test if the plants could exist in a self-contained environment.
Three out of four plant species faded and died, but the fourth, spiderwort plant, flourished and continues to grow.
It survives on sunlight alone.
