Recently there has been an uprising on Social media sites with people worldwide complaining that, while male nipples remain uncensored, any pictures with female nipples in them get flagged or reported.

To demonstrate how fed up she was, Micol Hebron posted a picture of a man’s nipple on her Facebook page. Beneath the image was this caption:

“Here you go — you can use this to make any photo of a topless woman acceptable for the interwebs! Use this ‘acceptable (male) nipple template’, duplicate, resize and paste as needed, to cover the offending female nipples, with socially acceptable male nipples (like a digital pasty). You’re welcome.”

Hebron was frustrated with the way female nipples were hypersexualized while male nipples seem to be completely permissible. So, women who are tired of having their topless photos removed from social media have begun using male nipples to cover up their breasts.

#FreeThenNipple is the hashtag that’s being used by this movement with a very strong and growing following.

Free The Nipple advocates for equal rights for men and women as well as the right to comfortably breastfeed in public. It spreads its mission through social media and a film (aptly titled “Free The Nipple”) that “follows a group of young women who take to the streets of New York City topless, to protest the archaic censorship laws in the United States.”

Singer Courtney Love shared her support for the campaign with an Instagram post recalling Hebron’s idea and challenging the photo-sharing platform’s guidelines.

Other celebrities to get behind Free The Nipple include Miley Cyrus, Lena Dunham and Chrissy Teigen.

It definitely seems preposterous and misogynistic that images of womens’ breasts are not considered acceptable, and that they are suddenly deemed acceptable if a woman’s nipples are covered by an image of a man’s nipples. A woman’s breasts AND nipples should not be censored or shamed. It is a very strange world that we live in.
