Norwegians have an incredibly strange safe-sex campaign. It was launched in response to Norway’s soaring STD rate, which is the highest of all Nordic countries. The man inside the costume, 19-year-old student Philip van Eck, beat several hundred other applicants to get the job and was hired by sexual health charity RFSU to don the costume. Van Eck explained to Norway’s Tønsberg Blad newspaper why he took the job. “I thought it was hilarious. If I can help others, just by being a dick, there is nothing better.”

The video, which is currently being broadcast across Norwegian television, shows van Eck spraying gold glitter from the top of his costume onto unsuspecting young people as they relax in parks and outside cafes.

The tagline of the video is “Tiss kan overraske” which translates in English to either “penis” or “urine” “can surprise you”, according to the Local Norway.

Pernille Berg, who works at Involve!, the advertising agency which produced the film, told local Norwegian media: “Sex should be fun, exciting and a little naughty. We wanted the campaign to reflect that.”

Almost 23,000 Norwegians contract chlamydia each year according to RFSU, the charity who thought up the campaign. However, Norwegians are still less likely to use condoms than people of the same age living in any of the other Nordic countries.

Christina Placht, a spokeswoman for the charity RFSU, told Newsweek that they wanted the video to make people laugh, whilst also sending a serious message about the importance of safe sex.

“If you’re working with young people, humour is often the way to go, rather than using scare tactics,” Placht said. “There is a simple yet serious message behind it. We have to get more people using condoms in Norway.”

Over the last 10 years, the number of cases of chlamydia recorded annually amongst 16-25 year olds in Norway has steadily increased. “In order to try and get these numbers down, the video is just one of a number of campaigns we are running,” Placht said.

Placht said that Norwegians have reacted well to the video. “Everyone has laughed and enjoyed the video,” Placht says, “It has been a fun way to pass on a very serious message to the young people.”
