“We could not predict that prolonged fasting would have such a remarkable effect in promoting stem cell-based regeneration of the hematopoietic system.”
Valter Longo

This quote from from author and co-researcher Valter Longo came after a very interesting study the effects that fasting had on regenerating Stem Cells.

In short many amazing things happen during fasting that can be healthy but who knew this level of health would happen?

Fasting forces the body to use stores of glucose, fat and ketones, but it also breaks down a significant portion of white blood cells.

Also fasting reduces the enzyme PKA, this effect was discovered by the Longo team. In short they found that this triggers the regulation of stem cell self-renewal and pluripotency — that is, the potential for one cell to develop into many different cell types.

The application is mind blowing but for the moment the research is limited to the immune system. Perhaps we will see a few more amazing discoveries from this team.
