The House of Representatives will be voting today on whether or not to grant the president fast track authority (known an TPA) to move ahead with the TPP. If approved the deal would not be subject to any amendments when it goes to Congress and we would either be stuck with it or not.

To give you an idea of the sort of things that can happen under this deal just the other day H.R. 2392 was passed in the house. This was a bill to repeal labeling for country of origin on meat products. It was brought about by Mexico and Canada through the WTO. Instead of looking to other trade countries that have modified but kept food labeling laws in order to provide the population with country of origin information, H.R. 2393 completely repeals food labeling for not just the types of meat specified by the WTO suit but for chicken as well which was not even in the suit. I guess the bill’s sponsors were feeling generous? Recently President Obama said:

[TPP] critics warn that parts of this deal would undermine American regulation — food safety, worker safety, even financial regulations. They’re making this stuff up. This is just not true. No trade agreement is going to force us to change our laws.

H.R. 2393 says something different. Why should we have country of origin labeling on our clothing and not our food? Should I feel better about eating my shirt than a hamburger? If that’s not enough I encourage you to visit and take a look at the Real-Life Attacks section.

If you feel that the above and other aspects of these trade deals are cause for concern please call your representative today and ask that they vote no on Fast Track and no to the TPP. If you need to find your rep in the House you can do so here:
